Wildfires disrupt flights, affecting 1,070 passengers
Maros (ANTARA) – A total of 1,070 passengers were affected by the cancellation of seven flights from Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport in Maros Regency, South Sulawesi, due to poor weather conditions linked to forest and land fires.
Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport General Manager Ruly Artha said in a written statement received in Makassar on Tuesday that the cancellations were recorded in the airport’s operational data for Monday (12 October).
“Operational data for 12 October 2026 recorded seven cancelled flights, affecting a total of 1,070 passengers,” he said.
He said the cancelled flights comprised three on the Makassar–Sorong route, one Makassar–Ambon flight, two Makassar–Ternate flights and one Makassar–Mamuju flight.
According to Ruly, the cancellations were prompted by poor weather conditions associated with the impact of forest and land fires, with flight safety and security the top priority.
The airport management is continuing to coordinate with airlines and other stakeholders to assist passengers affected by the cancellations. Measures include ticket refunds, rebooking and the provision of rest areas for passengers, subject to circumstances and applicable rules.
The airport is also coordinating with AirNav Indonesia and the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) to obtain the latest information on weather conditions and their impact on flight operations.
Ruly said conditions were being monitored continuously to ensure the public received accurate information about changes to flight schedules.
“We urge prospective passengers to keep up to date with flight status through their respective airlines’ official channels and to check their departure time before travelling to the airport,” he said.
Sultan Hasanuddin Airport management said it would continue coordinating with all relevant parties to maintain passenger services while prioritising flight safety.
