JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - A child identified by the initials M (9) sustained serious injuries after being attacked by a wild monkey on Jalan Marunda Empang RT 07 RW 07, Marunda Village, Cilincing District, North Jakarta, on Wednesday (20 May 2026).

As a result of the attack, the victim required medical treatment with a total of 30 stitches for bite wounds.

The victim’s grandmother, Badriah (57), said the incident occurred while her grandchild was looking after his younger sibling in front of their house.

However, suddenly a wild monkey came from behind and immediately attacked the victim.

“When he was feeding, suddenly from behind he was knocked over by it (the wild monkey). He cried out, ‘Nenek, Nenek, Nenek, help!’” said Badriah when interviewed at the location, Thursday (21 May 2026).

Hearing her grandson’s screams, Badriah ran to lend a hand.

However, the wild monkey managed to attack him again before it finally fled.

“When I saw it, ‘Oh my God, there was blood everywhere!’ So I hugged him again, the blood just kept flowing,” she said.

The victim was then taken to the nearest puskesmas (community health clinic) for treatment.

“At the puskesmas they stitched up to 30 stitches,” Badriah said.

According to Badriah, the wild monkey had been seen roaming around the neighbourhood for about the past week.

“It comes every day,” she said.
