Wikipedia Faces Blockade in Indonesia in 3 Days
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The Wikimedia Foundation, owner of Wikipedia, has been given a final ultimatum by the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs to comply with registration regulations for Private Electronic System Operators (PSE). The company has seven working days to fulfil this requirement.
The ultimatum was issued on Wednesday (15 April 2026). This means Wikimedia has until Friday (24 April 2026) this week to meet its obligations.
If not done, Wikimedia’s services risk being blocked in Indonesia.
“In this final extension of seven days, the Wikimedia Foundation is expected to promptly complete the PSE registration process in accordance with applicable provisions. If there is still no compliance with Indonesian law, we will take firm action in the form of blocking,” said Director General of Digital Space Supervision Alexander Sabar in his statement, quoted on Monday (20 April 2026).
For information, the registration is stipulated in Ministry Regulation No. 5 of 2020. If a platform fails to do so, it may face sanctions, from written warnings to service access termination or blocking.
“This is done to protect the public and also to protect the platform itself, in this case Wikimedia, so that it is legally protected,” Alex explained.
Komdigi provided details on this matter. The notification process for registration has been carried out since 14 November 2025.
However, Wikimedia has repeatedly requested extensions, which were granted by Komdigi. Up to 6 January 2026, an extension was requested again with a deadline of 20 January 2026, which Wikimedia also ignored.
Because it was not done, Komdigi sent a notice of planned blocking on 28 January 2026. On 25 February, limited blocking of the auth.wikimedia.org link was carried out because the company provided no response to the blocking plan.
