Kompas.com – The Wikimedia Project, including Wikipedia, has announced that its services could be blocked in Indonesia within seven working days if it does not register as a Private Electronic System Provider (PSE).

The announcement was made via the official Indonesian Wikipedia account on platform X on Wednesday (15/4/2026).

“The Wikimedia Project websites, including Wikipedia, will be blocked by Komdigi within 7 working days if they do not register as a private PSE in Indonesia,” stated the post uploaded by Wikimedia.

In the post, it was mentioned that the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) has given a deadline of seven working days before the blockade is implemented.

Wikimedia’s announcement is a follow-up to the ultimatum posted by the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi), which on Wednesday (15/4/2026) gave an ultimatum to the Wikimedia Foundation to immediately register as a private PSE.

Director General of Digital Space Supervision Alexander Sabar emphasised that this step is part of the government’s commitment to enforcing orderly and fair digital space governance for all platforms.

Alex stated that the government has even provided extensions since the initial notification on 14 November 2025.

“In the latest extension period, namely 7 days, the Wikimedia Foundation is expected to immediately complete the PSE registration process in accordance with applicable regulations,” emphasised Dirjen Alex in a press release, quoted by KompasTekno from the official Komdigi website.

“If there is still no compliance with Indonesian law, we will take firm action in the form of blocking,” he said.

In a previous statement, Wikimedia alluded to the PSE regulations implemented by the Indonesian government. The organisation views the PSE registration obligation as potentially a form of censorship in the digital space.

As a reference, Wikimedia included a link to an article titled “Internet Censorship in Indonesia” on the Wikipedia site. That article contains criticism from several international organisations regarding the PSE policy.

Several organisations mentioned include Article 19 and the Electronic Frontier Foundation. Both assess that the PSE regulation has a broad scope, requiring all internet services to register with the government, and is considered to have unclear definitions regarding content deemed “prohibited”.
