Wikimedia Officially Registers as PSE, Komdigi Restores Wikipedia Access
The Wikimedia Foundation has completed the registration process as a Private Scope Electronic System Provider (PSE) in Indonesia. With the completion of this process, the government is beginning to normalise access to Wikipedia services in the country.
Director General of Digital Space Supervision at the Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi), Alexander Sabar, stated that his office is currently processing the gradual restoration of Wikipedia access.
βThe Wikimedia Foundation has completed the registration, and we are currently processing the normalisation of Wikipedia access,β Alexander said in an official statement received by KompasTekno on Friday (1/5/2026).
He emphasised that PSE registration aims to create orderly, transparent, and accountable governance of electronic systems.
According to him, every electronic system provider has responsibility for the services operated in Indonesia. Through this registration, the government gains clarity on the responsible party and coordination mechanisms for regulatory implementation.
Alexander noted that the Wikimedia Foundation also affirmed its position as a global organisation supported by volunteer communities in various countries, including Indonesia.
Thus, views or statements expressed by Wikimedia Indonesia, including through social media, cannot be considered the official stance of the Wikimedia Foundation as the party subject to PSE registration obligations.
Previously, Komdigi restricted access to login features on Wikimedia services in Indonesia since 25 February 2026. The restriction was imposed because the Wikimedia Foundation had not registered as a Private Scope PSE.
The restriction applied to the subdomain auth.wikimedia.org, used for user authentication or login processes. This means users in Indonesia were temporarily unable to log in or create new accounts.
Based on KompasTekno records, Komdigi had also given a tight deadline and threatened to block Wikipedia access in Indonesia if they did not register in the PSE system by 22 April 2026 at the latest.
