PT Wijaya Karya (Persero) Tbk (WIKA) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting national education infrastructure development through the construction of the SMA Garuda project in North Kalimantan Province. For this project, WIKA is collaborating with its subsidiary, PT Wijaya Karya Bangunan Gedung Tbk (WEGE), under an Operation Cooperation (KSO) scheme. The construction of SMA Garuda in North Kalimantan is part of the government’s efforts to expand access to quality education, particularly in border areas. The presence of this educational facility is expected to become a centre for the development of science and technology, while encouraging the emergence of excellent human resources ready to contribute to regional and national progress. As a flagship school, SMA Unggul Garuda is designed to be a platform for nurturing high-achieving students with a focus on strengthening competencies in science, technology, and innovation. The establishment of SMA Unggul Garuda represents the government’s commitment to improving the quality of education while fulfilling national interests through the preparation of superior human resources, especially in science and technology. Through directed and high-standard education, students are prepared to continue their studies at top universities, particularly in leading fields that support national development priorities. The facilities to be built include academic buildings, classrooms, a multipurpose hall, an arts and performance theatre, a mosque, and sports facilities such as a football pitch. In addition, the SMA Garuda complex will also be equipped with supporting facilities including Graha Putra and Graha Putri student dormitories, staff apartments, 29 pairs of Type I official residences, and special housing for the School Principal and Vice Principal. To date, the project has involved 508 workers on site. Ongoing works include soil structure, substructure, superstructure, wall works, and plumbing works. During the construction process, WIKA is also implementing a logistics strategy tailored to the characteristics of the North Kalimantan region, including the shipment of pareto materials using barges from Surabaya to Tanjung Selor Port. This step is taken to ensure the availability of main materials is maintained so that on-site work can proceed optimally. Furthermore, the project has undergone several design adjustments to support construction effectiveness, including changing the foundation design from bore piles to a raft foundation, the conventional slab system to a bondek slab system, and structural design changes to a suspended slab. These adjustments are part of WIKA’s efforts to deliver adaptive, efficient construction solutions that meet the project’s technical needs. WIKA Corporate Secretary, Ngatemin, stated that the construction of SMA Garuda in North Kalimantan is a form of WIKA’s support for equitable development, particularly in the education sector. “WIKA is committed to delivering quality educational infrastructure while prioritising aspects of quality, occupational safety, and timely execution. The presence of SMA Garuda in North Kalimantan is expected to provide long-term benefits for improving access to education, as well as supporting the development of superior human resources in border areas,” said Ngatemin. This project is in line with President Prabowo Subianto’s national development vision through Asta Cita, which places education, mastery of science and technology, and equitable development as important foundations in realising an advanced and prosperous Indonesia. The construction of SMA Garuda in North Kalimantan Province is targeted for completion on 11 September 2026. Through this project, WIKA continues to strengthen its role as a strategic partner of the government in delivering educational infrastructure that focuses not only on the physical completion of buildings but also on long-term social benefits for the community.
