Wife of maid killer jailed

SINGAPORE: A Singapore woman whose husband beat their Indonesian
maid to death has been sentenced to nine months in prison for
torturing the teenager before she died, a newspaper reported on
Thursday.

Tan Chai Hong, 30, vowed to appeal the sentence and was
released on bail, the Straits Times said.

Tan's husband Ng Hua Chye is serving a 18-1/2 year prison
sentence and was caned 12 times for culpable homicide in the
death of Muawanatul Chasanah, which has been described as
Singapore's worst-ever case of maid abuse.

Muawanatul, 19, died of a ruptured stomach in November, 2001,
after Ng punched and kicked her in the abdomen.

Tan pleaded guilty last month to grabbing and squeezing the
maid's breasts a month before she died following nine months of
mistreatment. --AP
