Widespread Traffic Chaos After Crane Truck Collapses Tendean Footbridge
A pedestrian bridge (JPO) on Jalan Kapten Tendean, South Jakarta, collapsed after being hit by a heavy equipment transport truck, causing traffic chaos in the surrounding area. The traffic jams occurred from Tuesday (14/7/2026) morning until noon, with unavoidable congestion returning during the evening rush hour.
The accident involving the crane truck striking the footbridge happened on Tuesday at 00:30 WIB. The driver of the truck, with registration number B-9077-UFU, failed to account for the vehicle’s height because he was using his mobile phone whilst driving along Jalan Kapten Tendean.
‘The driver of the heavy equipment towing vehicle did not calculate the maximum height of the load,’ stated the Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) on Tuesday (14/7). ‘As a result, because the maximum height of the transported unit was not calculated, it snagged on the footbridge, causing the bridge to suffer quite severe damage,’ BPBD added.
During the bridge demolition process, congestion occurred at several points. The traffic jams arose because the lane towards Mampang was closed during the dismantling, and traffic towards Blok M was diverted. ‘Welding and demolition are still ongoing. It has been underway since 12:00 WIB,’ said Kompol Robby Hefados, Head of Binopsnal at the Metro Jaya Police Traffic Directorate.
Robby detailed that congestion points occurred on Jalan Suryo, Jalan Senopati, and Jalan Wolter Monginsidi. Traffic engineering in the form of diversions was implemented. ‘Vehicles from Jalan Suryo are still being diverted towards Wolter Monginsidi. Vehicles from Mampang towards Blok M are diverted to Jalan Warung Buncit. Vehicles from the Rasuna Said intersection are directed straight to Warung Buncit,’ he explained.
Observations in the Senopati area at 14:00 WIB showed congestion stretching from Jalan Gunawarman, with queues of vehicles extending to Jalan Senopati. Vehicles could only move slowly, and motorcyclists were seen weaving between cars and even using bicycle lanes due to the severe jam. The congestion continued to Jalan Suryo up to the Wolter Monginsidi intersection, where officers closed the road leading to Jalan Tendean or Pancoran. Many drivers sounded their horns, and some motorcyclists attempted to ride on the pavements.
In the Kuningan area at 14:56 WIB, congestion began at the Patra Kuningan bus stop, with long queues of four-wheeled vehicles. The jam only affected the right lane heading towards Tendean, while traffic towards Pancoran was observed to be smooth. On Jalan Gatot Subroto at 15:35 WIB, access towards Mampang Prapatan was diverted at the Kuningan intersection, with barriers blocking vehicles. Drivers could not turn right directly towards Mampang and were instead directed to turn left onto Jalan HR Rasuna Said before making a U-turn. Similarly, vehicles from Pancoran could not turn left directly to Mampang, as barriers blocked three access points to Mampang Prapatan at the Kuningan intersection. Traffic around the intersection was heavily congested, with police and Transjakarta officers managing the flow.
Congestion from the evacuation also occurred during the evening rush hour. At 17:15 WIB, traffic monitoring applications showed red indicators for congestion from the Kuningan intersection to the Semanggi Interchange. Jams were also scattered across various points, including Jalan Rasuna Said, Jalan Pasar Minggu, the SCBD area, and Jalan Jenderal Sudirman. By 18:25 WIB, the Metro Jaya Police Traffic Management Centre reported that Jalan Kapten Tendean towards the Santa traffic light was impassable due to the bridge cutting process blocking the road. By 19:00 WIB, congestion was still occurring on Jalan Gatot Subroto heading towards Kuningan, with traffic heavily backed up at the intersection with Jalan Kapten Tendean, and the tailback extending to Jalan MT Haryono towards Pancoran.
