JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Commission for Accelerating Polri Reform has completed its three-month work and reported its results to President Prabowo Subianto. One of the outcomes is that Polri will remain under the President, not under a new ministry. “Regarding the position of Polri, it remains as it is now, with Polri directly under the president,” said member of the Commission for Accelerating Polri Reform Yusril Ihza Mahendra after a meeting with President Prabowo Subianto at the Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday afternoon (5/5/2026). “No Ministry of Security or Ministry of Police will be established, nor will the police be placed under an existing ministry; Polri remains directly under the president,” he stated. This decision by the Polri Reform Commission has received support from Senayan. Deputy Chairman of Commission III of the DPR Ahmad Sahroni emphasised that placing Polri under a ministry is an impossible matter. He firmly stated that Polri being directly under the President of the Republic of Indonesia is a very appropriate decision. “It is already very appropriate that Polri is under the president and the appointment system is also through the DPR. Two years ago, I already said that Polri cannot be under a ministry; that is very impossible,” Sahroni said when contacted on Wednesday (6/5/2026). This is because there are already several recommendations from the Commission for Accelerating Police Reform that have been submitted to President Prabowo Subianto. “If it is like this, then it becomes a government initiative because there is a reform team,” said Sahroni. Member of Commission III of the DPR Abdullah supports the recommendation of the Commission for Accelerating Polri Reform which affirms Polri’s position under the President. According to him, Polri’s position under the President aims to maintain the effectiveness of command and the independence of the institution. “That position is important to maintain command effectiveness, institutional independence, and national security system stability,” said Abdullah on Wednesday (6/5/2026).
