Wider sidewalks for Kelapa Gading

JAKARTA: Upmarket housing estate Kelapa Gading is to get a new look this year following the preparation of a plan to construct wider sidewalks for pedestrians.

"We want to emulate the success of similar sidewalk-widening projects along Jl. MH Thamrin and Jl. Jend. Sudirman in Central Jakarta by constructing wider sidewalks for pedestrians here," Jakarta's governor, Sutiyoso, told reporters.

Sutiyoso hoped that the wider sidewalks would encourage residents to leave their cars at home and go on foot instead.

He said the administration would help property developer PT Summarecon Agung with the design and master plan for the project.

"But the construction and maintenance of the sidewalks will be carried out wholly by the developer," he said. --JP.
