Why Your Laptop Slows Down When You Open WhatsApp
Jakarta (ANTARA) - WhatsApp is one of the most widely used communication apps, including for work and study on laptops. However, some users may have experienced problems when opening WhatsApp Web or the WhatsApp Desktop app, ranging from pages taking a long time to load to a laptop becoming slow and unresponsive.
The problem can have several causes, from an unstable internet connection and too many open browser tabs to a laptop with almost no memory capacity remaining.
As WhatsApp on a laptop can be accessed through either a browser or a desktop app, the cause of any disruption may also depend on how the user accesses it.
So why does a laptop slow down when WhatsApp is opened, and how can the problem be fixed?
- Too many open tabs and running applications
One reason a laptop may slow down is that too many applications are running at the same time. This can consume memory, or RAM, particularly on laptops with limited specifications.
When you open WhatsApp Web in Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge while running other applications, the laptop has to divide its resources between each programme.
As a result, WhatsApp may take longer to load conversations, display images or respond to commands.
To address this, close browser tabs and applications you are not using. Windows users can also press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager and check which applications are using large amounts of CPU and memory.
- Unstable internet connection
WhatsApp Web requires an internet connection to send and receive messages and load photos, videos and documents. If the network is having problems, the app may appear slow even though the laptop itself is working normally.
According to the WhatsApp Help Centre, a poor internet connection is a common cause of problems sending and receiving messages, including when users upload or download media.
To check, try opening another website in your browser. If other sites are also slow, the problem is likely to be with your internet connection.
You can try connecting the laptop to another Wi-Fi network, using your phone as a hotspot or restarting the router. If only WhatsApp is affected, check the browser or app you are using.
- Browser cache and cookies have accumulated
Cache is temporary data stored by a browser to help websites load faster. Cookies, meanwhile, store certain information related to the sites you visit.
Under normal circumstances, cache helps websites open more quickly. However, problematic or outdated site data can prevent a page from loading properly.
If WhatsApp Web keeps loading, displays incorrectly or stops responding, try clearing your browser’s cache and cookies.
Bear in mind that deleting cookies may sign you out of some websites, meaning you will need to log back into the relevant accounts.
After clearing the data, reopen WhatsApp Web and link your account again if prompted.
- The browser is outdated or has too many extensions
WhatsApp Web is designed to work with supported, up-to-date browsers. Older browser versions may have compatibility problems or fail to support some features properly.
Certain browser extensions can also use additional resources or interfere with how a website functions.
If WhatsApp Web seems slow, check whether your browser is up to date. You can also try opening WhatsApp Web in a private or incognito window to see whether the problem is related to an extension or browser session data.
If WhatsApp works normally in that window, disable unnecessary extensions one at a time to identify the possible cause.
- The WhatsApp Desktop app is having problems
For users who have installed WhatsApp directly on their laptop, the problem may lie with the desktop app itself.
An outdated app, a process that has encountered an error or an issue following an update can make WhatsApp difficult to open and less responsive.
Try closing WhatsApp completely and then reopening it. If that does not work, restart the laptop.
Make sure you are using the official WhatsApp app and a version compatible with your operating system. If the problem persists, check for updates through the Microsoft Store or WhatsApp’s official channels.
As a temporary alternative, try accessing WhatsApp Web through a supported browser to see whether the issue is limited to the desktop app.
- The laptop has limited RAM or storage capacity
Laptops with little RAM are more likely to lose performance when running several applications at once. This may become more noticeable if you use WhatsApp while running document-editing software, video-conferencing apps or a browser with many tabs open.
A nearly full storage drive can also hinder some operating-system processes.
To check, open Task Manager in Windows and select the Performance tab. Monitor memory and disk usage while WhatsApp is running.
If memory usage is consistently close to its maximum, close applications you do not need. If storage space is nearly exhausted, delete unwanted files or move large files to another storage device.
You do not need to replace your laptop straight away. First check whether the drop in performance is actually related to hardware limitations.
- Conversations contain a large amount of media
WhatsApp conversations containing many photos, videos, documents or old messages can take longer to load, particularly if the internet connection is slow or the device has limited resources.
When you open a conversation with a large amount of media, the app may need time to display previews or download files that are not already stored locally.
If the problem occurs only when opening a particular conversation, wait for it to finish loading and avoid downloading many files at once.
You can also check how much storage the laptop is using and delete downloaded files you no longer need. Make sure important files have been backed up before deleting them.
Quick ways to fix a slow laptop when opening WhatsApp
If you want to try a few practical solutions first, take the following steps:
Close browser tabs and applications you do not need.
Check your internet connection and try another network.
Refresh WhatsApp Web, or close and reopen WhatsApp Desktop.
Clear your browser’s cache and cookies if the page continues to have problems.
Update your browser or WhatsApp through official channels.
Check RAM, CPU and storage usage in Task Manager.
Restart the laptop if the app remains unresponsive.
If you have tried all these steps but the laptop is still slow, check whether the problem also occurs when running other applications. If the entire laptop is slow, the cause may not be WhatsApp but limited resources, background processes or an operating-system problem.
