Why this interrogation?
Why this interrogation?
From Republika
If the report published in Republika (June 14, 1995) about the
police interrogation of Prof. Dr. Robert Hefner is true, it is
indeed a shameful and deplorable action. According to the report
the professor was interrogated for about six and a half hours. It
is deplorable because the police had no clear reason to
interrogate Prof. Hefner, who is honored by the Islamic community
in Indonesia.
His speech in front of an academic forum did not touch
practical politics. The speech was purely academic in nature.
The scholar spoke about how Islamic society could best and
positively contribute to the democracy prevailing in this
country, a speech that was worth studying.
If the questions from the audience were considered irrelevant,
why was Dr. Hefner subjected to this interrogation? I hope the
police will be more scrupulous in the future.
