Why the Tongue Is Considered Satan's Main Gateway to the Human Heart

The tongue is one of the easiest doors that Satan uses to slip into the heart; indeed, the tongue is the door most frequently visited by Satan every day.

This is because the tongue is the body part that works the most, is the easiest to use, and requires the least energy when employed.

Therefore, whoever is negligent in guarding his tongue has opened a path for Satan to enter his heart, take control of him, and then drag him until he stands at the edge of the precipice of ruin.

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

“A Muslim is one from whose hand and tongue the Muslims are safe.” (Narrated by Muslim)

This means that this is the description of a perfect Muslim and a true Muslim.

On one occasion, Mu’adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) was surprised to learn that a person would be held accountable for what he utters. He asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), “O Messenger of Allah, will we be held accountable for what we say?”

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) then said:

“May your mother be bereaved of you, O Mu’adh! Is there anything that throws people into the Fire on their faces — or he said, on their noses — except the harvest of their tongues?”

This hadith shows very clearly that one of the greatest causes of people entering Hell is the tongue.
