Why the Government Needs to Establish a TGPF in the Andrie Yunus Case

Calls to form an independent joint fact-finding team or TGPF have become a key demand from civil society coalitions in the case of the attack on human rights activist Andrie Yunus. The Advocacy Team for Democracy has requested that President Prabowo Subianto immediately establish a TGPF involving civil society elements through a presidential decree.

This move to form an independent TGPF is also supported by Saurlin P. Siagian. “If the president forms that team, it would be good,” said this Commissioner for Monitoring and Investigation at Komnas HAM when contacted on Wednesday, 25 March 2026.

He stated that forming the TGPF is urgent. According to him, although the police’s efforts to announce the suspected perpetrators have been quite progressive, it does not rule out the possibility of reluctance from police authorities to examine active military personnel involved in this case.

Based on information from the TNI Military Police Centre, four members from the Strategic Intelligence Agency or BAIS have been named as suspected perpetrators in the acid splashing case. All four are claimed to have been detained by Puspom TNI on 18 March.

“Therefore, forming a TGPF would be good, meaning to provide truly strong authority for the investigation,” said Saurlin.

Nevertheless, he mentioned that there have been no further discussions between Komnas HAM and the government regarding the formation of the TGPF. On the other hand, he stated that his institution has conducted monitoring by examining several witnesses in the attack on Andrie Yunus.

However, he said he could not yet provide information regarding the witness examinations. “We will inform you later,” he said.

The Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, and Community Immigration Yusril Ihza Mahendra has not responded when asked about the demand to form an independent TGPF in the Andrie Yunus case.

Previously, Andrie Yunus, who often criticises the TNI Law and the expansion of the military’s role in civilian spaces, was doused with acid while on Jalan Salemba I-Talang, Central Jakarta, on Thursday night, 12 March 2026. Andrie was splashed with a dangerous solution by two unidentified individuals. The two rode a motorcycle approaching from the opposite direction to Andrie.

The corrosive chemical liquid affected the right side of Andrie’s body, such as his eye, face, chest, and hand. Part of the victim’s clothing also melted due to the acid. Medical examinations showed that Andrie suffered serious burns covering 24 percent of his body. Andrie is currently undergoing treatment at the National Central General Hospital Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo (RSCM).
