Why Seeking Knowledge Becomes a Path to Salvation?
Many people spend their lives chasing success, devoting their time to seeking wealth, position, influence, and respect. However, not everyone realises that the greatest fortune is not when one becomes famous in the eyes of man, but when Allah SWT wills to make a person someone who understands His religion.
Religious knowledge is like a light that illuminates the long path of life. Without it, a person is like a traveller walking in the middle of the night without a lantern. He may keep walking, but he does not know whether the path he is on leads to safety or towards a destructive abyss.
For this reason, scholars have always placed knowledge as one of the greatest blessings that Allah can bestow upon a servant. With knowledge, a person knows his Lord. With knowledge, he knows the boundary between right and wrong. With knowledge, he is able to weigh every word and action on the scales of Sharia.
However, acquiring knowledge is not an easy matter. It demands sacrifice. A person must fight the laziness that resides within him. He must be willing to spare time, expend energy, and even sacrifice wealth to attend gatherings of knowledge. There are long days, there is fatigue, and there are temptations to stop midway. But all of that is part of the journey of a seeker of knowledge.
Like a farmer who plants seeds in the dry season, the results are not always immediately visible. He must patiently water, wait, and tend. But when the time comes, the seed grows into a sturdy tree that produces beneficial fruit. So too is knowledge. Its fruits may not be seen directly, but it will guide a person’s life throughout his lifetime.
Allah SWT Himself explains the nobility of people of knowledge in His decree: ‘Yarfa‘illāhul ladzīna āmanū minkum walladzīna ūtul ‘ilma darajāt.’ ‘Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.’ (QS Al-Mujadilah: 11). This verse shows that true nobility is not measured solely by what a person possesses, but by his closeness to Allah and the knowledge that guides his life.
Because of this, the Prophet Muhammad SAW conveyed a great glad tiding. In a hadith narrated by Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim, he said: ‘Man yuridillāhu bihi khairan yufaqqihhu fīd dīn.’ ‘Whomever Allah wills good for, He will grant him understanding in the religion.’
