Why Prabowo Submitted Only One Candidate for National Police Chief: Puan Explains

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, stated that President Prabowo Subianto has submitted only one name for the position of Chief of the Indonesian National Police (Kapolri), namely Commissioner General Pol. Suyudi Ario Seto.

Speaking at the parliamentary complex in Jakarta on Thursday, Puan noted that the submission of a candidate for National Police Chief is the President’s prerogative, and the process regarding Suyudi has been conducted in accordance with the mechanisms within the House of Representatives (DPR).

“This process itself has been carried out according to the mechanism after we received the Presidential Letter (Surpres) from the President, which was then followed up through the existing mechanisms in the DPR,” Puan said after presiding over a plenary session.

According to her, Commission III of the DPR raised no issues during the fitness and propriety test conducted for Suyudi.

Commission III of the DPR subsequently approved Suyudi as the National Police Chief by acclamation.

This approval was subsequently brought to the 8th Plenary Session of the DPR RI for the first session period of the 2026–2027 legislative year on Thursday, where it received the approval of the members of the House.

Following the approval from the DPR, Puan stated that the process for Suyudi’s inauguration by the President can proceed immediately, provided it adheres to the applicable mechanisms and regulations.

Previously, the leadership of the DPR received Presidential Letter Number R57/Pres/09/2026, dated 30 September 2026, regarding the proposal for the dismissal from the position of National Police Chief and the appointment to the position of National Police Chief.

The Consultative Body of the DPR subsequently tasked Commission III with conducting the fitness and propriety test for Suyudi.

Suyudi underwent the fitness and propriety test on Thursday, presenting his vision, policy direction, and the programmes he intends to implement should he lead the Indonesian National Police (Polri).

Commission III of the DPR approved Suyudi by acclamation before the decision was brought to the plenary session for final approval by the House.
