Why Prabowo Creates New Downstream, Energy Transition Ministry

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Downstream and Energy Transition, Bahlil Lahadalia, has yet to confirm which technical ministry he will coordinate with. Bahlil said he is still awaiting a Presidential Regulation governing the institutional structure of the new post.

Despite serving as Coordinating Minister, Bahlil will serve concurrently as Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources. “I will give my all, both as Coordinating Minister and as Energy and Mineral Resources Minister, because this is a calling to serve the Motherland,” Bahlil said at a press conference at the energy ministry office in Jakarta on Thursday, October 1, 2026.

According to the Golkar Party Chair, his new role is crucial for the acceleration of energy transition, which he said is a necessity amidst uncertain geopolitical conditions.

President Prabowo Subianto, Bahlil said, established the new ministry because he views priority programs related to downstream energy as crucial.

“Furthermore, the energy transition, as a global commitment under the Paris Agreement, cannot be implemented partially. It must be comprehensive, measurable, and truly achieve the targets mandated by Bapak President,” he said.

Bahlil did not answer questions about his duties, functions, and short-term targets as Coordinating Minister. He only stated that he was still learning the technical aspects because he had just been inaugurated.

“Just the easy stuff, okay? Don’t ask me questions. I was just inaugurated, so don’t ask me if I’m already working, okay?” Bahlil said.
