Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, has been confirmed to be absent from the funeral procession of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The decision has drawn public attention given the central status of both figures in the Islamic Republic.

Mojtaba’s absence from the final tribute was explained by senior Iranian official Ayatollah Hakim Elahi. According to Elahi, the decision was made considering extremely tight security measures amid lingering threats.

Authorities stated that Mojtaba remains at high risk of being targeted by Israel. His appearance in public is deemed to potentially increase the threat level, not only for himself but also for the millions of citizens thronging the procession sites.

Citing NDTV on Sunday (6/7), the risk of surveillance by Israeli intelligence made Mojtaba’s physical presence considered too dangerous. The Iranian government is seeking to minimise the risk of an attack that could endanger mourners.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is scheduled to be buried in the city of Mashhad on 9 July. Prior to the final resting place, the Iranian government has arranged a six-day series of tributes. The government estimates that millions of citizens will pack the streets in various cities. Large posters and billboards featuring the late Ali Khamenei have been installed across the country as a form of national homage.

Mojtaba’s absence from a crucial family event is not the first occurrence. According to an IranWire report, Mojtaba was also previously not seen attending the funeral procession of his wife, Zahra Hadad Adel, on Wednesday (1/7).

Zahra was one of the victims who died alongside Ali Khamenei in an airstrike launched by Israel and the United States in Tehran on 28 February. The funeral ceremony for Zahra at Farhang High School was only attended by her father, Gholam Ali Hadad Adel, without the presence of her husband in public.

Zahra Hadad Adel was known as an educator at Farhang School and had an educational background in communication science from Allameh Tabatabai University. Her tragic death in the same attack as her father-in-law adds a layer of security complexity for the Khamenei family at this time.
