The Jakarta Military Command (Kodam Jaya) has announced its involvement in hunting street robbers in Jakarta and surrounding areas. Commander of Kodam Jaya, Lieutenant General Deddy Suryadi, stated that the involvement of his command is to provide a sense of security for the community. According to him, street robberies in Jakarta have become rampant and are a source of public concern. He added that such crimes not only cause material losses but also instil fear among residents. ‘We want the public to feel safe during their activities, especially at night and in areas considered vulnerable,’ he said when contacted on Sunday, 24 May 2026. He stated that the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) will not stand idly by given the current security situation. General Deddy said his command would patrol alongside police to secure the area. ‘Public safety is the top priority,’ said the three-star general. General Deddy also urged the public to collaborate in safeguarding their neighbourhoods and remain vigilant. He called on residents to immediately report any potential threats or criminal activities to security authorities. ‘The synergy between the TNI, Indonesian National Police (Polri), and the public is key to creating a safe and conducive environment,’ he added. He stated that actions against street robbers would be carried out firmly and measuredly. However, General Deddy said a humanitarian approach would still be prioritised to maintain security without causing further unrest. Previously, Kodam Jaya announced it would deploy personnel from various units to hunt street robbers in the capital. This includes territorial units such as Koramil and combat battalion units from Kodim. Kodam Jaya’s Public Affairs Chief, Lieutenant Colonel of Air Defence Artillery Noor Iskak, explained that the TNI’s involvement in the operation is part of the security support from the General Criminal Investigation Directorate (Ditreskrimum) of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police. He stated that regional security is not solely the police’s responsibility but also falls to TNI personnel.
