Why Jokowi's Formal PSI Role Remains Uncertain

Although Jokowi is set to tour Indonesia, his formal role within PSI remains uncertain. He is believed to be waiting for the party to grow somewhat larger. The seventh Indonesian president, Joko Widodo, is set to embark on a nationwide tour shortly. Bestari Barus, chairman of PSI’s Central Executive Board, stated that the former Solo mayor will begin his tour in Lampung, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), and West Java. However, Jokowi’s position within PSI has yet to be officially announced. Speculation suggests he may take on a role in the party’s Advisory Council. So why has his role not been announced despite plans to visit various cities? Even without an official announcement, Djayadi believes Jokowi’s tour remains relevant as he has already positioned himself as a key leader within the party. ‘It’s just a matter of timing; I suspect it won’t be long before Jokowi makes the announcement. There’s already much speculation that he will join the Advisory Council,’ Djayadi told Kompas.com on Thursday (28 May 2026). Moreover, his youngest son, Kaesang Pangarep, currently serves as PSI’s Chairperson, while his eldest son, Gibran Rakabuming, is not affiliated with any party. ‘PSI is the only possible option. Therefore, even without an official announcement, it’s widely assumed that Jokowi will join PSI,’ he added. He suspects Jokowi is still seeking the right moment to announce his role. According to Djayadi, the former head of state has always been known for timing his decisions carefully since taking office. Drawing on his decade-long presidency, Jokowi has consistently timed key decisions, such as ministerial reshuffles often scheduled on Wednesday Pon days. ‘Over his 10 years in office, he has always sought specific moments to make announcements—whether cabinet formations, ministerial changes, or policy declarations—choosing dates he deems appropriate. Perhaps he is now waiting for the right moment to announce his role as PSI’s Advisory Council Chairman,’ he said.
