Why Israel?
Why Israel?
From Republika
President Abdurrahman Wahid recently issued a policy to the
effect that it is high time Indonesia established trade relations
with Israel. The policy merely reiterates his statement made
several years ago when he was the chairman of the board of
Nahdlatul Ulama. The move has not only led to a major question
among the ulemas who know well who the Israelis really are;
debates have also occurred among the economists.
Taken in the real sense, what benefit can we gain from having
trade relations with a small country with a small population such
as Israel? Will our exports be bigger than our imports? Why not
establish and/or enhance trade relations with Middle Eastern
countries with a combined population greater than Indonesia.
We must look toward Islam. Its religious dogma prohibits
Muslims from associating with unbelievers in general and the Jews
in particular, either to seek help from them or let them become
leaders.
