Why is Mount Bromo Closing During Early June 2026 Long Weekend?

In early June 2026, Indonesians will be greeted with a long weekend for Pancasila Day on Monday, 1 June. Those planning to visit Mount Bromo during this period should adjust their plans, as the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) has officially closed all tourism activities from Saturday, 30 May 2026, 00:00 WIB until Tuesday, 2 June 2026, 23:59 WIB. The decision follows a circular from the Chairman of the Tengger Region’s Paruman Dukun Pandita (No. 294/E/PDP-Tengger/V/2026) regarding the 2026 Yadnya Kasada Ritual. TNBTS subsequently issued Announcement Letter No. PG.7/T.8/TU/HMS.01.08/B/05/2026 mandating the cessation of tourism in the area. TNBTS Chief Rudijanta Tjahja Nugraha stated the access restriction is to respect the Tengger community’s annual ritual. ‘During the closure, only ritual participants may enter,’ said Rudi. With an elevation of 2,329 metres, Bromo will be free of tourists during the ceremony, allowing indigenous communities full access to perform rituals, including offerings and ceremonial rites in the caldera. The closure on 2 June also facilitates post-ritual site cleaning. Tourists can return from Wednesday, 3 June 2026, at 01:00 WIB. TNBTS urges compliance with regulations and respect for Tengger customs. Despite the temporary closure, Bromo remains one of East Java’s premier tourist destinations.
