The defendants in the alleged corruption case regarding investments from BVI and MDI into the startup TaniHub have been facing prison sentences. The question remains: what actions led this investment into the startup to result in a corruption case?

According to reports on Tuesday (2/6/2026), the determination of suspects in this case was announced by the South Jakarta Attorney’s Office in September 2025. The case has progressed through the legal system, with suspects appearing for trial at the Central Jakarta Corruption Court in February 2026.

There are at least nine defendants in this case, including:

  1. NW, President Director of BVI

  2. WG, Vice President of Investment at BVI

  3. IAS, Director of PT Tani Grup Indonesia

  4. ET, Director of PT Tani Grup Indonesia

  5. AAH, VP of Investment at PT MDI

  6. DSW, President Director of PT MDI

  7. The corporation PT Tani Group Indonesia (PT TGI)

  8. The corporation PT Tani Hub Indonesia (PT THI)

  9. The corporation PT Tani Supply Indonesia (PT TSI)

While individual defendants have undergone sentencing hearings, the corporate defendants are still in the witness examination stage.

According to the indictment against the corporation PT Tani Supply Indonesia, defendants IAS and ET, as managers of the TaniHub Group, are alleged to have falsified data regarding the gross revenue of TaniHub Group from 2017 to 2019. They are also accused of creating accounts receivable data that did not reflect the actual financial situation.

This falsified data was subsequently used by WG to prepare pre-feasibility studies (Pre-FS) for preliminary due diligence memos and deep-feasibility studies (Deep-FS) submitted when TaniHub Group sought funding from BVI in 2019. This data also formed the basis of the investment approval by NW, the President Director of BVI, as recorded in the Investment Approval Memo. Furthermore, the financial data was included in pitch decks used by AAH to conduct pre-due diligence (Pre-DD) and due diligence (DD) for the investment application to PT MDI in 2020, which led to the investment decision by DSW, the President Director of PT MDI.

Prosecutors stated that these actions violated several laws, OJK (Financial Services Authority) regulations, and the board resolutions of each state-owned enterprise subsidiary. The prosecution alleges that these actions enriched:

  • IAS by Rp 2,292,997,322

  • ET by Rp 92,892,134

  • PT Tani Group Indonesia by USD 25,000,000, equivalent to approximately Rp 364,221,571,600.

The funds were allegedly diverted to other entities, namely:

  • PT Tani Hub Indonesia: Rp 263,906,571,600

  • PT Tani Supply Indonesia: Rp 77,221,000,000

These funds were then further distributed to:

  • PW: Rp 1,167,551,718

  • AS: Rp 28,580,571,600

  • PT Jaring Pangan Indonesia: Rp 1,932,546,836

“The actions caused losses to state finances or the state economy amounting to USD 25,000,000, equivalent to Rp 364,222,167,880, or at least approximately that amount, as stated in the state loss audit report regarding the alleged corruption in the management of investment funds from PT MDI and PT BVI into PT Tani Group Indonesia, the agritech startup TaniHub and its affiliates from 2019 to 2023,” the indictment continued.

Following the examination of witnesses and defendants, prosecutors read the sentencing demands in May 2026. The demands are as follows:

  1. NW: 11 years in prison and a fine of Rp 1 billion, with a 190-day substitute imprisonment.

  2. WG: 9 years in prison and a fine of Rp 1 billion, with a 190-day substitute imprisonment.

  3. IAS: 12 years in prison, a fine of Rp 1 billion, with a 190-day substitute imprisonment, and restitution of Rp 3,259,270,740, with a 6-year substitute imprisonment.

  4. ET: 10 years in prison, a fine of Rp 1 billion, with a 190-day substitute imprisonment, and restitution of Rp 1,059,165,552, with a 5-year substitute imprisonment.

  5. AAH: 12 years in prison and a fine of Rp 1 billion, with a 190-day substitute imprisonment.

  6. DSW: 12 years in prison and a fine of Rp 1 billion, with a 190-day substitute imprisonment.

The reading of these demands marks the end of the witness and defendant examination phase. Some defendants are scheduled to present their defence statements (pleidoi) on Wednesday, 3 June 2026.
