Why Insulting Religion is Considered a Sign of Ignorance: An Explanation from the Prophet

The phenomenon of insulting religious teachings, religious symbols, or religious figures is not new in human history. From an Islamic perspective, such behaviour reflects not only a lack of manners and morality but also demonstrates a spiritual ignorance that can lead an individual to disregard sacred matters sanctified by Allah SWT.

The Prophet Muhammad SAW even identified insulting religion as one of the characteristics of a foolish person. This is recorded in his advice to his companion, Ali bin Abi Thalib RA: ‘O Ali, there are three signs of a foolish person: neglecting the obligations imposed by Allah, excessive talking about things other than the remembrance of Allah, and disparaging religion.’

This explanation is found in the book Wasiyatul Musthafa by Sheikh Abdul Wahhab Asy-Sya’rani. In the Islamic view, insulting religion is not merely an act that hurts the feelings of believers, but an attitude that shows a loss of respect for the Sharia and the values derived from Allah SWT.

Those who insult religious teachings and symbols are essentially following the path taken by the polytheists of the Quraysh when the Prophet Muhammad SAW delivered the message of Islam. They did not only reject the Prophet’s preaching but also used Allah’s revelation as a subject for mockery and ridicule.

Allah SWT immortalised this behaviour in the Quran: ’If you ask them, they will surely say,
