Why English language?

From Media Indonesia

It is a common practice, nowadays, among university students to mix English and their local dialects in day-to-day life. Lecturers too are doing the same thing.

It is quite apparent that they are not yet able to use the national language, Indonesian, well and correctly. Oddly enough, a good mastery of English is mandatory in every university in this country.

Several private universities have applied English in interviews for admitting new students. The mastery of English is a passport to be admitted to universities.

There is an educational establishment called the "London School" in Jakarta. This could indicate that the students studying in that school are Americans, Australians or Europeans. But that is not the case. Most of the students are Indonesians, and very few hail from other countries.

Many local writers seem also to have a habit of including English words in their writing.
