JAKARTA – Automotive observer Bebin Juana has assessed that geopolitical tensions in the Middle East threatening global oil supplies could trigger fuel scarcity and sharp increases in fuel prices, making electric vehicles (EVs) an increasingly relevant solution for the public.

“When fuel becomes scarce due to turmoil in the Middle East, in addition to being scarce, its price has the potential to skyrocket. No one knows how high the price will go,” said Bebin.

According to Bebin, by logic, conditions of fuel scarcity and high petrol prices will push consumers to switch to electric vehicles.

“The public’s choice of battery-based electric vehicles as an alternative that deserves consideration,” he said in a statement in Jakarta on Tuesday, 17 March 2026.

However, he cautioned consumers to remain prudent and not be merely tempted by technology labels on such vehicles.

The public is expected to choose vehicles that can deliver tangible results in daily energy consumption efficiency.

“Consumers must be smart in choosing vehicles that truly demonstrate fuel savings,” he said.

Bebin estimates that if there is a transition of around 100,000 to 150,000 consumers to electric vehicles, the impact will be significant in reducing queues at fuel stations.
