Have you ever woken up feeling uneasy after experiencing a vivid nightmare? This phenomenon is known as ‘stress dreams’. Although not always extremely frightening, these experiences can leave one feeling anxious even after waking up.

A clinical psychologist describes stress dreams as a signal that the body and mind are trying to process unresolved emotional pressures. “Essentially, these dreams stem from unprocessed emotions. If we don’t fully process stressful emotions during the day, we will experience disturbing dreams at night,” she explained, as reported by Seventeen, Saturday (16/5/2026).

So, how can we deal with them? Before addressing stress dreams, it is important to understand their root cause.

According to clinical psychologist Dr. Lauren Kerwin, most dreams occur during the REM (rapid-eye movement) sleep phase, when the brain is very active in processing experiences and pressures from throughout the day.

“During REM sleep, the brain undergoes intense activity. This is when the brain processes all the stress experienced throughout the day,” she said.

Pressures from work, conflicts with partners, academic burdens, financial anxieties, and concerns about the future can be carried over into the subconscious. Therefore, dealing with stress-related dreams requires more than just improving sleep; it also involves managing the sources of stress in real life.

The most effective way to reduce stress dreams is to lower anxiety levels while awake. “Managing emotional health to reduce stress levels is one of the most effective ways to alleviate stress dreams,” she said. Meditation, journaling, yoga, or simply listening to calming music can help the brain release tension.
