Why Did the Madiun Munitions Depot Explode, Killing One Soldier? Here's What the Army Says

The Indonesian Army (TNI AD) is still unable to confirm the cause of the explosion at the Central Munitions Depot II of the Army Equipment Centre (Puspalad) in Saradan, Madiun Regency, East Java, on Thursday, 16 July 2026. In addition to the cause, the Army has also not disclosed the type of munition that exploded in the incident, which killed one soldier and injured six other personnel. Head of the Army Information Service, Brigadier General TNI Donny Pramono, stated that all information regarding the cause and type of munition involved will only be released once the investigation team has completed its work. “We cannot speculate on what exploded and what type it was,” Donny said on Friday, 17 July 2026. According to Donny, the explosion occurred while personnel were carrying out inspection, maintenance, and servicing of munitions in accordance with applicable procedures. “The maintenance and servicing were indeed carried out according to established procedures, from the initial briefing to the execution,” he said. The Army has deployed an investigation team from the Army Equipment Centre (Puspalad) to determine the exact cause of the incident. However, the investigation process cannot yet be carried out comprehensively because the explosion site must first be confirmed safe. Donny explained that the team is prioritising sterilisation of the area to anticipate the possibility of remaining hazardous munitions. “The handling cannot be careless. We cannot just enter directly,” he said. He added that the incident site has now been cordoned off, and only personnel assigned to the investigation team are permitted to enter the area by following safety procedures. Although no deadline has been set for completing the inquiry, the Army has assured that the investigation will be conducted thoroughly to fully uncover the cause of the explosion. The incident resulted in the death of one Army member, while seven other members sustained injuries. According to information gathered at the scene, the explosion occurred around 9:00 a.m. local time.
