Why did police not fine cars in a Zig-zag Convoy on the Becakayu Toll Road?
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Police confirm that they did not issue fines to a number of car drivers taking part in a convoy with zig-zag maneuvers on the Bekasi–Cawang–Kampung Melayu Toll (Becakayu). Although the actions were seen as potentially endangering other road users, police opted for an educational approach toward the drivers involved. Head of the Highway Patrol Unit (Kasat PJR) of the Metro Jaya Police’s Traffic Directorate, AKBP Reiki, said officers would issue verbal warnings if they managed to identify the drivers performing the manoeuvres. He emphasised that police would not issue fines in this case as prevention is prioritised. ‘There is no fining in this matter; we do not fine because we prioritise preventive measures or provide education first,’ he added. Currently, police are still tracing the identities of the vehicle owners suspected of taking part in the zig-zag convoy on the Becakayu Toll. ‘For now we are tracing the whereabouts in line with the address and we will visit if it matches the address on the STNK. If four vehicles are detected,’ Reiki said. Earlier, a video circulated on social media showing several cars conducting a zig-zag convoy on the Becakayu Toll. The video was posted by the Instagram account @jakarta_siders. In the footage, several cars are seen zig-zagging on what appears to be a relatively quiet road. Some cars are recorded in a zig-zag convoy as if on a race track on the Becakayu Toll, Kalimalang, East Jakarta. Although the road appears clear, the actions are deemed to endanger other road users travelling in the area, according to the caption from @jakarta_siders.
