REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Public transportation expert in the railway sector, Joni Martinus, has spotlighted several issues that led to the tragedy of the KA Argo Bromo Anggrek colliding with a KRL in the Jabodetabek area at Bekasi Timur Station. Joni stated that the absolute block system signalling principle in Indonesian railways requires the entry signal to be red while there is a train in the block ahead. “The fact that the KA Argo Bromo Anggrek was able to enter and collide with the KRL in front of it is something that must be thoroughly investigated and given attention by the KNKT,” said Joni in his statement in Jakarta on Tuesday (28/4/2026). According to him, in general, there are several factors that could cause a train to be rear-ended. First, violation of the red signal (indication to stop) or signal passed at danger. Second, failure of the signalling system resulting in the display of an incorrect aspect (wrong side failure). Third, miscommunication regarding speed limits in the procedure for cautiously passing a red signal. “Fourth, deviation from procedures that allow a train to enter a track still occupied by another train,” said Joni.
