Why BYD Chose the M6 as its First Model with DM Technology
Jakarta — BYD has chosen the M6 as the first model to use the Dual Mode (DM) technology in Indonesia, not without reason. According to Eagle Zhao, President Director of PT BYD Motor Indonesia, the decision rests on the M6 being regarded as having a strong foundation in the market as a 7-seater family car that is environmentally friendly since its introduction. In its first year, the M6 recorded sales of around 10,100 units. With a large user base, BYD is optimistic that the DM technology will be more readily accepted by consumers as a transitional solution toward full electric vehicles. The DM technology itself combines an electric motor and a petrol engine in one integrated system. The system is designed to prioritise electric power while still offering flexibility for long journeys without full reliance on charging infrastructure. Zhao emphasised that DM technology is not merely a hybrid system, but a technology platform that BYD will continue to develop for other models in the future. “For us, DM technology is a platform. We believe we will continue to introduce more models based on this technology,” Zhao said. Through the M6 DM, the company also aims to expand education about electrified vehicles in Indonesia. Consumers are expected to directly understand how PHEV technology works through everyday driving experiences. Therefore, BYD will broaden the introduction of DM technology through test drive activities so the public can directly experience electrified driving. This step is part of BYD’s strategy to gradually build an ecosystem of new energy vehicles (NEV) in Indonesia.
