Why Bushehr Became a Target: Iran's Russian-Built Nuclear Power Plant Struck by US

The United States has launched fresh airstrikes on the city of Bushehr, Iran, on Wednesday (15/7) local time. The area, which hosts one of Iran’s largest Nuclear Power Plants (PLTN), has once again become a primary target amid escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran.

Iran’s official news agency, IRNA, reported that the US military strikes targeted several strategic points. Bushehr Governor Mohammad Mozafari confirmed three locations were hit during the attack. Official information regarding casualties or the extent of damage to the nuclear facility’s infrastructure has not yet been released.

The strike follows an ultimatum from US President Donald Trump, who stated that nuclear facilities and strategic infrastructure, including bridges, would continue to be targeted with high-intensity operations unless Tehran agrees to return to the negotiating table. Trump asserted that the military campaign would be ‘very tough’ on Iran until he decides it is enough.

Despite the assault, Trump claimed lines of communication remain open, revealing that talks were held the day before the strike. The Bushehr plant has long been a flashpoint; its construction, taken over by Russia after Germany withdrew under US pressure in the 1990s, symbolises a trilateral collaboration that Washington views as a threat to regional stability. The US has responded with successive rounds of sanctions against companies investing in Iran’s energy sector since the mid-1990s.

The latest attack not only worsens bilateral US-Iran relations but also triggers international alarm over the potential for an environmental catastrophe and the security of nuclear facilities in the Middle East should the escalation continue without a diplomatic resolution.
