Why Are Women's Carriages Positioned at the Back of the Train? Here is the Reason
The Argo Bromo Anggrek long-distance train on the Gambir-Pasar Turi route was involved in an accident with a KRL Commuter Line at Bekasi Timur Station on Monday, 27 April, around 20:50 WIB. In several videos circulating on social media, the locomotive of the KA Argo Bromo is seen crashing into the rear carriage of the KRL, causing it to crumple.
Based on the latest data on Tuesday, 28 April 2026, 15 people have been recorded as deceased and 84 injured victims have received medical treatment at various health facilities.
The Head of the National Search and Rescue Agency, Air Marshal TNI Mohammad Syafii, stated that all 100 per cent of the evacuated victims were women.
“Alhamdulillah, from Basarnas, assisted by TNI-Polri and all potentials, we have completed the SAR operation with special handling in less than 12 hours, starting from last night we all mourned the accident that occurred at 08:57 between two trains, namely the Commuter train and Argo Anggrek,” said Syafii at Bekasi Timur Station on Tuesday, 28 April 2026.
As a result of this incident, the Minister for Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection (PPPA) Arifah Fauzi has proposed that KRL women’s carriages be placed in the middle of the train set.
Why Are Women’s Carriages Positioned at the Back of the Train?
Following the accident, many members of the public have questioned why the special women’s carriage is placed at the rear of the train. It turns out that this policy not only applies to the Commuter Line but is also implemented on the Light Rail Transit (LRT), where the women’s carriage is also at the very back.
Referring to the official Instagram site of KAI LRT Jabodebek on Wednesday, 29 April 2026, this placement is designed to enhance security, comfort, and ease of supervision for female users.
- Easier Monitoring
Officers can monitor the special women’s area more focused because its position is localised at the end of the train set.
- More Orderly Access
Placement at the back helps regulate the boarding and alighting flow of female users to be more orderly and not too mixed with other users.
- Minimal Risk of Violations
Special placement at the back facilitates control and prevents violations of the special women’s area rules.
Proposal to Move Women’s Carriages to the Middle of the Train Set
The Minister for Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection (MenPPPA), Arifah Fauzi, has proposed moving the KRL women’s carriage, which was originally at the end, to the middle of the train set.
