Why are tires more prone to wear and cracking in the dry season?
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Higher road temperatures during the dry season can accelerate tire wear and cause cracks, necessitating drivers to monitor tire pressure and tread condition to ensure safe driving.
” increased temperatures in tires while driving, especially during the dry season, are normal,” stated Apriyanto Yuwono, National Sales Manager Passenger Car Radial at PT Hankook Tire Sales Indonesia (HTSI), in a written statement on Tuesday. “However, excessive temperature and tire pressure can reduce grip and increase the risk of blowouts. SUV users should regularly check tire pressure, particularly when tires are cold, to avoid overinflation,” he added.
Maintaining optimal tire performance is crucial, especially when driving on damaged surfaces. The National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) has highlighted that internal tire factors, such as suboptimal air pressure, often contribute to highway incidents.
Apriyanto outlined several considerations for SUV users to minimise wear and cracking:
tread design: square-profiled treads distribute vehicle weight evenly across the tire surface, ensuring stability and preventing uneven wear from excessive pressure on specific points.
tread structural strength: rigid tread patterns maintain tire shape and stability at high temperatures, particularly when driving at high speeds or carrying heavy loads.
user characteristics: for daily use on asphalt roads, tires prioritising comfort, stability, and low noise are optimal. For heavy loads or challenging terrain, tires with robust structure, strong tread, and higher traction are necessary.
“SUV users must understand that tires are not merely accessories but a critical safety component. pressure distribution technology and robust tread structure help reduce blowout risks while enhancing long-term efficiency,” Apriyanto added.
Hankook’s Dynapro series offers solutions for SUV needs, designed for premium comfort, low noise, smooth handling, and high stability on roads. The Dynapro HT focuses on maximum durability with a stronger structure and higher wear resistance, suitable for high-intensity or long-distance travel. Both products embody “economy of durability” through extended lifespan and consistent performance.
