Why Are More People Choosing to be Childfree? A Psychologist's Explanation
Discussions about childfree or life without children are increasingly appearing in public spaces. Psychologists say this narrative can influence how some people view the decision to have children. The presence of the discourse can even provide a ‘psychological licence’ for people who previously felt pressured by social norms. Psychologist from Ibunda.id, Danti Wulan Manunggal, S.Psi., says this phenomenon shows a shift in society’s view of the family. She said this when contacted by Kompas.com on Monday, 2 March 2026. Social norms in society have traditionally tended to regard having children as part of life that must be undertaken. However, in recent years, discussions about childfree have started to appear in the media and public spaces. This situation makes society more aware of the option. Although it still sparks debate, the existence of this discourse influences how some people view family life. Some people who were previously hesitant feel braver to consider the option. ‘When someone sees others can be happy without children, it gives a ’psychological licence’ to those who have long been unsure but feel pressured by social norms,’ said Danti. This condition makes the decision to have children no longer entirely influenced by social pressure. Some people choose to have children, while others choose a different life path. The decision is increasingly considered based on mental readiness, life conditions, and personal goals. This phenomenon shows that discussions about childfree also affect the social dynamics in society. The choice to have children or not is now increasingly viewed as a personal decision.
