Why Are Many Women More Anxious in Their 30s?

Many women experience heightened anxiety, self-doubt, and emotional pressure when entering their 30s. Social demands, personal expectations, and identity shifts make the 30s to 40s a challenging period for many. According to licensed professional counsellor and author of ‘Unpacked: How to Detach From the Subconscious Beliefs That Are Sabotaging Your Life’, Kristen Jacobsen, the pressure women face at this age often stems from societal expectations about how life should progress. A primary cause of increased anxiety in women in their 30s is the pressure to meet idealised life achievements. At this age, many women begin comparing themselves to societal standards around them, feeling they should already have stable careers, be married, have children, or meet specific financial targets. Jacobsen notes that society still holds strong expectations for achievements in adulthood. ‘There is a societal expectation that by this age, you should have a career path, be married, and have children,’ Jacobsen said, as reported by SELF Magazine on Saturday, 30 May 2026. If these targets are unmet, some women feel they are falling behind peers, triggering anxiety, self-doubt, and fear of not meeting expectations. Unlike the 20s, often seen as a time for exploration, the 30s are viewed as a period where life decisions carry greater consequences. Jacobsen explains this makes people feel they have little room for error or changing direction. ‘At this life stage, every decision can feel immense and permanent, as if there is no space to experiment, take risks, or fail,’ she said. Consequently, women increasingly anticipate worst-case scenarios before making decisions.
