Why a Single Day Delay in Driver's Licence Renewal Requires a New Application

Driver’s licence (SIM) renewals must be completed before the expiry date. If the validity period has passed, you will certainly be required to apply for a new licence following the full initial application mechanism.

Even if you are only one day late, you must still apply for a new SIM. Why is this the case?

This is because it is explicitly stated in Police Regulation Number 5 of 2021 regarding the Issuance and Marking of Driver’s Licences. Article 4, paragraph (3) of the regulation explains that licences that have passed their expiry date must be reissued as new licences.

“In the event that the SIM has passed its period of validity as referred to in paragraphs (1) and (2), an application for the issuance of a new SIM must be submitted,” states the regulation, as reported by detikOto.

The Digital Korlantas Instagram page also confirmed this. It stated that licences that have expired cannot be renewed either online or offline, even if they are only one day overdue.

“SIMs that have passed their validity period cannot be renewed even if they are only one day late. This means you must apply for a new SIM at the nearest SATPAS. Please renew your SIM before the expiry date to avoid the need for a new application,” the explanation noted.

Applying for a new licence involves a different mechanism compared to a renewal. The requirements are more extensive and the costs are different. The fees for the issuance of new SIMs and renewals are regulated under Government Regulation Number 76 of 2020 regarding the Types and Tariffs of Non-Tax State Revenue Applicable to the National Police.
