Wholesale market plan unclear

TANGERANG: The plan to build a wholesale vegetable market, or an agricultural terminal, in Balaraja district, Tangerang regency, was first revealed last September, but six months later, the project remains unclear.

"We have heard that the project has attracted many investors from Asian countries. However, we know nothing about the progress of the plan," Tangerang agricultural agency head Nana Mulyana said on Monday.

Tangerang regency is to provide 10 hectares of land in Balaraja while the Jakarta administration is to finance the project.

Nana said the two administrations planned to build a more modern wholesale market than the existing Kramat Jati wholesale market in East Jakarta as a transit point for all agricultural products from Sumatra island and Banten province, from where they would be distributed to Jakarta and other cities. -- JP
