International humanitarian organisations are ramping up aid deliveries to eastern Democratic Republic of Congo as the Ebola outbreak spreads and becomes increasingly difficult to control. On Thursday (28 May 2026), humanitarian workers unloaded medical supplies, personal protective equipment, and emergency medicines from a cargo plane at Bunia Airport, a key hub for outbreak response. The World Health Organization (WHO) warned that the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola has surpassed local response capacities. The WHO reported over 900 suspected Ebola cases, with at least 101 confirmed and around 220 deaths linked to the outbreak in the DRC and Uganda. The outbreak’s epicentre is in Ituri Province, but cases have now spread to North and South Kivu provinces. Approximately 100 tonnes of humanitarian aid are being shipped in stages, including medicines, medical protective gear, emergency tents, and facility security materials.
