White House: Trump and Xi Reach Trade and Security Agreement
Istanbul (ANTARA) - US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping have reached an agreement to stabilise relations between Washington and Beijing during the US President’s first visit to China since 2017, the White House stated on Sunday (17/5).
The two leaders agreed that the US and China must pursue what they described as a constructive relationship based on strategic stability, fairness, and reciprocity, according to the statement.
Trump is expected to welcome Xi to Washington this autumn, while both governments stated they would support each other as hosts of the G2/G20 and APEC summits later this year.
Discussions also covered key international security issues. According to the statement, Trump and Xi agreed that Iran must not acquire nuclear weapons and called for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, stating that no country or organisation should impose customs duties there. The leaders also reaffirmed their shared goal of the denuclearisation of North Korea.
The agreement establishes two new bilateral institutions: the US-China Trade Council and the US-China Investment Council. The Trade Council is intended to assist both governments in managing trade in non-sensitive goods, while the Investment Council will serve as an intergovernmental forum for investment-related issues.
The statement also outlined several economic commitments from China, including measures related to rare earth metals and other critical minerals such as yttrium, scandium, neodymium, and indium. Beijing stated it would address US concerns regarding supply chain shortages and restrictions on the production of rare earth metals and processing equipment.
China also agreed to an initial purchase of 200 Boeing aircraft for Chinese airlines, marking its first commitment to purchase American-made Boeing aircraft since 2017. The statement noted that the agreement would benefit US manufacturing jobs.
In the agricultural sector, China has committed to purchasing at least $17 billion of US agricultural products annually in 2026, 2027, and 2028, in addition to the soybean purchase commitments made in October 2025. Beijing is also restoring market access for US beef by renewing the expired list for more than 400 American beef facilities and adding new ones. China stated it would work with US regulators to lift remaining suspensions on US beef facilities, according to the statement. Furthermore, China will continue importing poultry from US states that have been designated by the US Department of Agriculture as free from highly pathogenic avian influenza.
