MOSCOW — The US government believes clarity on a deal with Iran could be achieved by next weekend, Axios reported on Sunday (31 May 2026). The statement cited a senior White House official.

The New York Times reported on Sunday that US President Donald Trump has put forward stricter conditions for a possible deal to end the conflict with Iran and presented a new proposal to Tehran. Axios then reported that Iran would respond to the proposal within about three days.

‘There will be a deal. As for how soon, we’ll see. We’re willing to wait for the president to get what he wants. It could be within a week. Less. Or longer. By the end of the week, we hope to have something,’ the official told Axios.

On 28 February, the US and Israel launched joint strikes on several targets in Iran, causing damage and civilian casualties. On 7 April, Washington and Tehran announced a two-week ceasefire.

Further talks in Islamabad ended without reaching an agreement, and the US then began imposing a blockade on Iranian ports. US President Donald Trump subsequently extended the cessation of hostilities to allow Iran time to prepare a peace proposal.
