Washington (ANTARA) - White House Spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said on Wednesday that Chinese President Xi Jinping has assured US President Donald Trump that Beijing is not supplying any weapons to Iran amid the conflict.

“President Xi assured President Trump that they are not supplying weapons to Iran during the conflict, and this assurance was conveyed to the president,” Leavitt said during a press conference.

Meanwhile, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who accompanied Leavitt at the event, highlighted China’s important role in purchasing Iranian oil.

“China buys more than 90 per cent of Iran’s oil, which amounts to approximately eight per cent of China’s energy needs,” Bessent said.

He added that a blockade in the Strait of Hormuz could temporarily stop China from purchasing crude oil from Iran.

The US Treasury Secretary said two Chinese banks have been warned that they could face sanctions if they receive money from Iran.

“Two Chinese banks have received letters from the US Treasury Department. I will not name the banks, but we told them that if it is proven that Iranian money flows through their accounts, we will impose secondary sanctions on them,” Bessent said.
