While Everyone Sleeps, Train Services Keep Running

Railway infrastructure readiness across Java is maintained through overnight maintenance, track inspections, and preparation for the first morning services.

While most of the public rests overnight, railway operations continue unabated. Behind every morning train service across Java’s cities, thousands of staff work to ensure rolling stock readiness, inspect tracks, manage schedules, and confirm all trains depart punctually.

PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) reports that 2,062 trains will be managed for operations across Java in 2026, spanning various types and classes. Of these, 1,789 units are operational and ready to serve passengers across different routes.

Vice President of Corporate Communications at KAI, Anne Purba, stated that infrastructure readiness is maintained through continuous 24-hour operational processes, including overnight and pre-dawn hours when public activity wanes.

‘Critical tasks are performed overnight to ensure the first morning trains run safely and on schedule. Staff inspect tracks, clean carriages, conduct technical checks, and prepare rolling stock for early departures,’ said Anne.

At depots and departure stations, nighttime activities are a crucial operational phase. Trains complete their duties and immediately undergo technical inspections, body washing, brake system checks, air conditioning tests, electrical checks, and interior cleaning before returning to service.

Simultaneously, infrastructure staff inspect tracks, switches, signalling systems, and operational networks across Java’s routes to ensure safety during peak morning hours.

KAI also maintains spare rolling stock for operational flexibility. Of the total available units, 258 are kept as reserves to accommodate additional services or address operational disruptions.

Meanwhile, 273 units undergo routine maintenance as part of ongoing efforts to sustain reliability.

The most numerous operational train types include the stainless steel New Generation economy class, premium economy, and regular economy services.

Data shows most rolling stock remains operational despite regular maintenance rotations. Of KAI’s 209 stainless steel New Generation economy trains in Java, 181 are operational. Similarly, 171 out of 197 premium economy units are ready for passenger service.

According to Anne, railway operations follow a distinct rhythm compared to other transport sectors, as most preparation occurs overnight and pre-dawn.

‘When passengers board morning trains, a lengthy process has already been underway since the previous night. Many staff work silently to ensure safe, comfortable, and punctual journeys,’ Anne concluded.
