Today, the Javanese year 1959 Dal will be replaced by 1960 Ba’. The moment of the Javanese New Year transition arrives on the night of 1 Suro, the evening of the shift from the month of Besar to Suro. On that night, there are several weton that are best not to venture outdoors. What are they?

Adapted from the book Kapan Mau Hijrah by Muhammad As-Syarif el-Qomar, a weton is a person’s day of birth along with its pasaran. Simply put, it is a combination of the conventional day of birth, such as Monday or Wednesday, plus the Javanese pasaran day.

The Javanese pasaran day, also called the pancawara cycle, consists of five days. The five are Legi, Pahing, Pon, Wage, and Kliwon. The cycle of conventional days and pasaran days runs concurrently and resets every 35 days.

The combination cycle of conventional days and Javanese pasaran days repeats every 35 days. Consequently, there are a total of 35 birth weton, such as Senin Pahing, Jumat Kliwon, Minggu Wage, and Sabtu Legi.

The question is, which weton are prohibited from going out on the night of 1 Suro?

Which Weton Should Not Go Out on 1 Suro Night?

According to a paper titled Malam Satu Suro dalam Perspektif Antropologi Budaya by Alifia Kazimatuz Zahra, the weton believed to be prohibited from going out on the night of 1 Suro is Tulang Wangi. What is that?

Ifan Andriado and Astrid in the book Tali Sukma: Graflit explain that the Tulang Wangi weton is also known as Balung Kuning. People with this birth weton are believed to possess a different aura that attracts unseen beings to approach.

Therefore, it is not surprising that the Tulang Wangi weton is forbidden from going out on the night of 1 Suro. Bearing in mind that, during this New Year’s Eve transition, the Javanese believe many spirits roam about.

So, what are the Tulang Wangi weton? Here is the list:

  • Senin Kliwon

  • Senin Wage

  • Senin Pahing

  • Selasa Wage

  • Rabu Pahing

  • Rabu Kliwon

  • Kamis Wage

  • Sabtu Wage

  • Sabtu Legi

  • Minggu Pon

  • Minggu Kliwon

List of Prohibitions on the Night of 1 Suro

Although the Tulang Wangi weton is specifically ‘prohibited’ from going out, the restriction on going out on the night of 1 Suro is essentially general. Interestingly, it is not only going outside that is believed to bring misfortune on the night of 1 Suro, but also a number of other activities.

Here are some other prohibitions on the night of 1 Suro:

  1. Holding Celebrations

Riskha Nadia Ayuputri, in her article ‘Larangan Beserta Tradisi Malam 1 Suro di Surakarta’ published in Jurnal Tanda, explains that holding celebrations on the night of 1 Suro is forbidden. This is because Suro is viewed as a month suitable for prayer and seclusion, not for celebrating anything.

  1. Quarrelling and Speaking Harshly

Another prohibition for the night of 1 Suro is written by Muhammad Dandi Kurnia in a thesis titled Perspektif Akidah Islam tentang Pantang Larang Malam Satu Suro di Masyarakat Suku Jawa Desa Karya Indah, Kabupaten Kampar. It is explained that quarrelling and speaking harshly are forbidden, especially on the night of 1 Suro.

Instead, the night of 1 Suro is used by Javanese people to maintain inner peace and self-introspection. This night is also considered sacred, so it is inappropriate to defile it with arguments or bad expressions.

  1. Moving House

On the night of 1 Suro, Javanese people abstain from building or moving house. If violated, it is feared the homeowner will encounter misfortune.

This abstinence is rooted in the belief that the night of 1 Suro is a time for calming oneself and engaging in contemplation, not for starting activities considered to bring major changes in life. To this day, this prohibition is still observed by some Javanese people.

Besides the three prohibitions above, there are many other abstinences on the night of 1 Suro, such as:

  • Going out of the house

  • Being noisy

  • Travelling far

  • Avoiding worldly matters

When is the Night of 1 Suro 2026?

It is important to note that the night of 1 Suro and the night of 1 Muharram may fall on different dates. The reason is that the number of days in the Hijri calendar can vary, between 29 or 30. Meanwhile, the Javanese calendar has months with a fixed, regular number of days.

Quoted from the book Horoskop Jawa by Suroso Aji Pamungkas, odd-numbered Javanese months have 30 days. Meanwhile, even-numbered months consist of 29 days. Specifically for the month of Besar, the number of days can be 30 or 29. So, when is the night of 1 Suro 2026?

According to the Kalender Hijriah Indonesia Tahun 2026 released by the Ministry of Religious Affairs, 1 Suro 1960 Ba’ falls on Wednesday, 17 June 2026. Thus, the night of 1 Suro falls today, precisely on Tuesday night, 16 June 2026.

Why not Wednesday night? Because the Javanese calendar has a different time for the change of day compared to the Gregorian calendar. If the Gregorian calendar changes day at 00.00 midnight, the Javanese calendar changes when the sun sets.

Consequently, on Tuesday afternoon, precisely when the sun sets marked by the maghrib call to prayer, 1 Suro has already begun.
