The legal counsel for the former Deputy Minister of Immigration and Correctional Services, Silmy Karim, stated that his client did not receive any summons from the KPK before being detained on Thursday (4/6). Sahala Siahaan noted that his client only became aware of his alleged involvement in an extortion case within the Directorate General of Immigration through mass media reports.

“In fact, he learned about this from the news because there were no summons whatsoever,” Sahala said when met in front of Silmy Karim’s residence in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, on Friday.

Claiming that no summons had been issued by the anti-corruption commission, Sahala mentioned that his client was continuing his usual activities when the KPK announced the search for Silmy Karim on Wednesday (3/6).

“[At that time], he was certainly carrying out his activities,” he added.

Sahala also expressed regret regarding the framing of his client’s situation. “Mr Silmy never received a summons regarding any event, yet the framing makes it appear as though he was difficult to locate. This creates ambiguity and causes confusion among the public,” he said.

“Did Mr Silmy ever receive a summons? Has he been summoned three times? Was he placed on a wanted list until there was an appeal to surrender? This is something we need to scrutinise closely because it is very detrimental to Mr Silmy Karim’s position,” he further stated.
