Where Does Tan Kian Rank Among Indonesia's Wealthiest?

Tan Kian is a name well known in Indonesian property circles, though he tends to keep a low profile and rarely appears in the media. The question of where he ranks among Indonesia’s richest often arises because of his history of appearing on the Forbes list in the 2000s. However, by 2026, his position is no longer among the top tier dominated by the likes of Low Tuck Kwong, Prajogo Pangestu, or the Hartono family. According to Forbes records, Tan Kian once ranked around 30th to 31st on the list of Indonesia’s wealthiest individuals. In 2007, his wealth was estimated at US$225 million, and in 2008 it was around US$175 million. He is known as the owner of Dua Mutiara Group, now known as Century Properties Group Indonesia, a premium property development company focused on exclusive projects in Jakarta’s elite areas. Tan Kian was born into a modest entrepreneurial family involved in the shrimp and textile trade. He is the second generation who successfully grew the family business into a property empire. Since the early 1990s, he built a reputation as a boutique developer specialising in high-end, limited-quantity, high-quality projects. Iconic projects linked to Dua Mutiara Group/Century Properties include Pacific Place Jakarta in the SCBD area, one of the capital’s most luxurious malls and lifestyle centres; The Ritz-Carlton Jakarta in Mega Kuningan and Pacific Place; the JW Marriott Hotel Jakarta; the Millennium Centennial Center in the Sudirman CBD; and the South Hills apartments along with various other premium office and residential buildings. These projects not only became Jakarta landmarks but also contributed significant asset value. In 2016, his wealth was estimated at around US$570 million, or approximately Rp9.3 trillion, by the Jakarta Globe. He was also recorded as building a luxury resort with 60 villas on Bintan Island. In 2017, Tan Kian handed over the leadership reins to his son, Nicholas Tan, while remaining a key figure behind the group. The rebranding to Century Properties Group marked a new era of expansion and professionalised management. In the 2025-2026 period, the list of Indonesia’s richest people is dominated by entrepreneurs from the coal, petrochemical, banking, and technology sectors, such as Low Tuck Kwong, Prajogo Pangestu, and the Hartono family. The total wealth of the top 50 richest Indonesians has reached a record high, exceeding US$300 billion.
