Whence our nationalism?

Whence our nationalism?

It hurts us as a nation when some of us help to stage anti-
Indonesia protests abroad.

On his return flight from a visit to four countries, President
Soeharto said the government would take a firm measures against
such people.

"They are crazy people, irrational and have to be punished.
How come they sell our nation out?" the President said.

This case is more saddening still because the nation is
celebrating its 50th year of independence.

We are of the opinion that those who would like to express
themselves do not have to go abroad. Don't let frustrations blind
us and force us to take undue actions for ours is a state based
on Pancasila.

Globalization has rendered the world unbelievable information
access. Whatever happens in our country will be known abroad
instantly. Hence, it is no longer useful to stage demonstrations
abroad.

On the other hand, the globalization drive is scrutinizing our
nationalism. It is exactly in this era that our nationalism
should be at its height.
