The government has officially announced the implementation of a work-from-home system, or work from home (WFH), for central and regional civil servants (ASN). This policy will take effect starting tomorrow, Wednesday (1 April 2026).

This was announced by Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto during an online press conference on Tuesday evening (31 March 2026).

So, what about private sector employees?

The government has left the regulation to the Minister of Manpower (Menaker) to establish the mechanism that will be applied.

Clearly, there are exceptions for business sectors directly related to public services, so they are still required to work from the office.

When will WFH for private workers be implemented?

“The implementation of WFH for the private sector is regulated by a circular from the Minister of Manpower, still considering the needs of the business sectors including efficiency,” Airlangga stated during the online press conference on Tuesday (31 March 2026).

The sectors exempted from WFH and required to work from the office and in the field include public services, health, security, cleanliness, production, energy, basic commodities, food and beverages, transportation, trade, and logistics.

“The education sector will remain face-to-face five days a week and there are no restrictions on sports events,” he explained.

Airlangga said the government is taking this step to anticipate the ripple effects of the conflict in the Middle East, which is affecting global energy price volatility.

“This policy is a precautionary step by the government that is included in the national work culture transformation programme which upholds the concept of efficiency and modernity,” he said.
