The government has officially implemented a work-from-home (WFH) policy for civil servants (ASN) every Friday to enhance energy efficiency in the face of global conflicts. Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto stated that the policy will take effect from 1 April 2026 and will be evaluated after two months of implementation. “The implementation of WFH for ASN in central and regional offices, one working day per week, namely every Friday, is regulated in the Circular Letter from the Minister for Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform and the Circular Letter from the Minister of Home Affairs,” Airlangga said during a press conference on Tuesday (31/3). The government is also limiting the use of official vehicles and encouraging the use of public transportation. “Mobility efficiency includes a 50 percent restriction on official vehicle use, except for operational purposes and electric vehicles, and promoting public transportation,” Airlangga stated. In addition, the government is restricting domestic official travel by 50 percent and international travel by 70 percent. He estimated that the WFH policy for ASN every Friday could save up to Rp6.2 trillion in the State Revenue and Expenditure Budget (APBN). “The potential savings from this Work from Home policy directly to the APBN is Rp6.2 trillion, in the form of fuel compensation savings,” he said. Airlangga noted that sectors not subject to WFH include public service sectors and strategic sectors. Public service sectors such as health, security, and cleanliness, as well as strategic sectors like industry or production, energy, water, staple goods: food and beverages, trade, transportation, logistics, and finance. At the same time, Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian stated that several ASN positions at the provincial and district/city levels are exempt from the WFH policy. According to his presentation, there are 11 ASN positions at the provincial level that are excluded from the WFH policy. Two of them are the High Leadership Position Madya and the High Leadership Position Pratama. Then, at the district/city level, there are 12 ASN positions excluded from the WFH policy. One of them is the sub-district head and village head/desa head.
