When will RI sell motorcycles?
From Pikiran Rakyat
Chinese-made motorcycles of a variety of trade marks are now flooding the Indonesian market. They are generally cheaper than motorcycles made in Japan and other countries.
I'm not sure whether our people are really keen on buying these Chinese motorcycles or just showing some interest in them. One thing for sure is that the promotion of these products has been very intensively conducted.
To me, an interesting point to note is that it is not all of a sudden that our market has been flooded by Chinese motorcycles. This means that our businessmen in this area have been taken off- guard. I'm curious about why we have always been left behind in doing business. Is it not possible for Indonesia to be industrialized like China and Taiwan, whose industrial development took off much earlier than that of mainland China.
We always boast of our rich natural and human resources. Just think that our population stands at over 200 million people. Unfortunately we are always left behind in trade. We are too much absorbed in politics and power struggle. Soeharto's fall has brought to us an excessive euphoria of freedom.
Our politicians are concerned more with the facilities that they enjoy as legislators rather than with the destiny of the people, who are their electoral voters. They no longer remember that we need economic recovery and the restoration of security.
Given this fact, when will we ever be able to sell our motorcycles to China, which is a vast market of about one billion people?
